Under the leadership of Germany Trade & Invest, key stakeholders from the German region of Rostock explored Spain’s world-class expertise in Barcelona, Madrid, Málaga and Valencia. Engagements with key government bodies (Ministerio para la Transición Ecológica y el Reto Demográfico, ACUAMED, Aguas de las Cuencas Mediterráneas, S.A.), operators (ATL, Aqualia, GS Inima Environment), associations (AEDyR), R&D centers (Eurecat — Technology Centre), clusters (Catalan Water Partnership CWP), and startups (Ecomemb, aonchip, BACO) provided invaluable insights into efficient operations, financing (PPPs/BOT), regulation, and innovation – vital for Germany’s first steps.
This topic is of great importance for the North-East region. Rostock is proactively planning a large desalination plant (>100k m³/day) to secure water for future industries such as green hydrogen and to strengthen regional competitiveness and resilience. This trip was about learning from the best. Our CAMPFIRE spokesperson was able to join the delegation and make valuable contacts for the alliance on the topic of Power-to-Ammonia as water treatment is an important component in decentralized ammonia plants.
