28 October 2019. At its second Advisory Board Meeting, our Advisory Board – which consists of nine experts from business, science and civil society – recommended four additional collaborative projects for funding. The project teams will start work in spring 2020: the SSAS-MEA project will develop membranes, electrodes and substrates for solid-state ammonia synthesis, an innovative electrolysis process for decentralised ammonia production. The integration of electriceramic thin films into the membrane-electrode unit can achieve high efficiencies, high cycle stability and a resource-saving electrolysis process for decentralised energy conversion. Over the next 30 months, the partners in the second project, Green Ammonia Reaktor, will develop a new process for the production of green ammonia in micro-reactors using innovative heat transfer methods. In the third project, Green Ammonia Anlage, partners will produce a concept for the functional model of a plant for the industrial production of green ammonia at a site in the region in order to ensure that the plant construction can accommodate the economic synthesis of green ammonia on a small and fluctuating scale. In the fourth project, Sport Yacht, consortium partners will develop an ammonia-powered on-board power supply and secondary propulsion system based on a hybrid system of solid oxide fuel cell and engine, which will be integrated into a sport yacht. This will be the first time that ammonia is used as a marine fuel in our region in the project period. The project will provide an opportunity to gain valuable experience in the operation of the propulsion system and in the handling of the fuel.
