First project teams are on the way: second meeting of the CAMPFIRE Advisory Board

At its second Advi­sory Board Meeting, our Advi­sory Board – which consists of nine experts from busi­ness, science and civil society – recom­mended four addi­tional colla­bo­ra­tive projects for funding. The project teams will start work in spring 2020: the SSAS-MEA project will develop membranes, elec­trodes and substrates for solid-state ammonia synthesis, an inno­va­tive elec­tro­lysis process for decen­tra­lised ammonia produc­tion. The inte­gra­tion of elec­tri­ce­ramic thin films into the membrane-elec­trode unit can achieve high effi­ci­en­cies, high cycle stabi­lity and a resource-saving elec­tro­lysis process for decen­tra­lised energy conver­sion. Over the next 30 months, the part­ners in the second project, Green Ammonia Reaktor, will develop a new process for the produc­tion of green ammonia in micro-reac­tors using inno­va­tive heat transfer methods. In the third project, Green Ammonia Anlage, part­ners will produce a concept for the func­tional model of a plant for the indus­trial produc­tion of green ammonia at a site in the region in order to ensure that the plant cons­truc­tion can accom­mo­date the economic synthesis of green ammonia on a small and fluc­tua­ting scale. In the fourth project, Sport Yacht, consor­tium part­ners will develop an ammonia-powered on-board power supply and secon­dary propul­sion system based on a hybrid system of solid oxide fuel cell and engine, which will be inte­grated into a sport yacht. This will be the first time that ammonia is used as a marine fuel in our region in the project period. The project will provide an oppor­tu­nity to gain valuable expe­ri­ence in the opera­tion of the propul­sion system and in the hand­ling of the fuel.
