Our now third partner workshop in the product category “Emission-free Martime Drives”, focused on the one hand on innovative drive concepts and further on the regulatory framework and safety aspects for ammonia. Very inspiring was the kick-off contribution of Peter de Vos, TU Delft, Netherlands, on SOFC-ICE combined hybrid systems for use as the future maritime propulsion systems. Martin Reißig, FTVR from Rostock, presented the potential and challenges of hydrogen and ammonia in combustion engines in another talk. The concept of an innovative membrane reactor for flameless combustion of ammonia as a possible propulsion for shipping, but also for stationary energy supply was presented by Ralf Kriegel from IKTS in Hermsdorf. The HiPowAR reactor is currently being developed as part of the EU project carried out by CAMPFIRE partners. Bert Buchholz, University of Rostock, gave another groundbreaking speech presenting the existing research tasks and challenges for combustion and emission reduction of ammonia-fueled reciprocating engines, followed by a very interesting presentation on catalysts for NOx and N2O reduction in modern SCR systems by Roger Gläser, University of Leipzig. As an enabler for ammonia-based shipping, shore-based storage systems need to be developed, and we were pleased to hear a presentation on this topic by Anke Krutof of Göhler GmbH. Another highlight was the presentation by Carsten Spieker of GEA Group on onboard safety concepts for the use of ammonia as fuel and risk management for the toxic hazardous substance. The IGF Code (Code of Safety for Ships using Gases or other Low-flashpoint Fuels) and new developments for alternative fuels, especially ammonia, were presented by Benjamin Scholz, DNV, as an important set of regulations for the approval of ammonia-fueled ships. We would like to thank all presenters, the participants and our moderators Jens Wartmann, ZBT, and Benjamin Friedhoff, DST, for the very successful event and look forward to another year of cooperation on our common path towards ammonia-based shipping.
