On January 12, 2022, the kick-off meeting for our project “GreenBalticCruising” of the joint partners Carnival Maritime, Port Rostock, IKEM, ZBT and INP as well as the associated partners DNV and ISC took place in form of an online conference.
The use of the new energy carrier ammonia on the Baltic Sea requires a detailed consideration of the Baltic Sea countries, their port structures and ship connections with northern Germany. To this end, the joint project will examine the national strategies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and the respective climate targets of the littoral states and identify the necessary political, scientific and economic players. In addition, the legal framework is being developed and refined to allow ammonia to be used as a maritime fuel in shipping and to create new business models in the northeast region, for example through sustainable tourism concepts. For a cruise ship for about 4,500 passengers with a propulsion power of 40 MW and an ammonia tank capacity of 2,000 tons, the partners will conduct a technical assessment for a new propulsion system consisting of ammonia cracker and low-temperature polymer exchange membrane fuel cell (NT-PEMFC) powered by green ammonia compared to a propulsion system powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a reference. The tourist route in the Baltic Sea region chosen for the operation of the cruise ship should have optimal conditions for the creation of a suitable shore-based bunkering facility. The overall objective of the project is to open up new economic potential for regional SMEs by developing new value chains with equal partnerships in the Baltic Sea region.
