CAMPFIRE Symposium in Ozeaneum Stralsund 30. September 2021

As an in-person all-day event around Green Ammonia, our sympo­sium on September 30, 2021 was a great plea­sure and inspi­ra­tion for all part­ners and friends of the CAMPFIRE Alli­ance. Special high­lights were our inter­na­tional guests from the Nether­lands, nort­hern Sweden, and Denmark, as well as the real-life exhi­bi­tion of a hydrogen refue­ling faci­lity and the Odin — a 150-ton ammonia bunker ship that made its way from Berg­kamen in North Rhine-West­phalia to Stral­sund for the sympo­sium to allow parti­ci­pants to see the safety systems on board. The sympo­sium kicked off with a highly inte­res­ting presen­ta­tion by Jorgo Chat­zi­markakis, CEO Hydrogen Europe, on the Euro­pean Hydrogen and Ammonia Stra­tegy in the Mari­time Sector, which stimu­lated many discus­sions after­wards. Other very valuable and exci­ting inputs were the presen­ta­tions by Alex­ander Feindt, MAN Energy Solu­tions SE on ammonia in ship­ping inclu­ding the Ammo­niaMOT project and CAMPFIRE partner Malte Zeretzke, Carnival Mari­time on new paths in sustainable ship­ping and chal­lenges ahead for the cruise industry. Also of parti­cular inte­rest and high importance for our future work was the presen­ta­tion by Conor Fürs­ten­berg Stott from the Ammonia Energy Asso­cia­tion (AEA). Conor presented an over­view of new inter­na­tional projects in the green ammonia field and the approach to low-carbon and green ammonia certi­fi­ca­tion. Trave­ling from nort­hern Sweden, Mox Murugan, Invest in Norr­botten, presented a fanta­stic talk on future Green Ammonia produc­tion in Arctic Sweden. We are very much looking forward to working with Mox on a joint project for the hand­ling of green ammonia in the Port of Rostock. The future path and exis­ting chal­lenges in the world scale produc­tion of green ammonia were shown by Markus Will, Thys­sen­krupp Uhde, in another highly inte­res­ting presen­ta­tion. In this context was. In the southern Baltic Sea region and at the door­step of the HyStarter region Rügen-Stral­sund, the Danish island Born­holm is being deve­loped as a future energy island and supplier of Germany with “green elec­trons”. These exci­ting acti­vi­ties were presented to the parti­ci­pants by Michael Antony Brock, Ørstedt. Proton Venture is the Euro­pean pioneer in Green Ammonia tech­no­lo­gies and we were parti­cu­larly pleased to hear Kevin Rouwen­horst’s presen­ta­tion on “Ammonia, the ‘Oil of Rene­wa­bles’ ”. At the end of the event, CAMPFIRE partner Patric Stefa­niak, ENERTRAG gave a presen­ta­tion on Green Ammonia as a seasonal energy storage.
