As an in-person all-day event around Green Ammonia, our symposium on September 30, 2021 was a great pleasure and inspiration for all partners and friends of the CAMPFIRE Alliance. Special highlights were our international guests from the Netherlands, northern Sweden, and Denmark, as well as the real-life exhibition of a hydrogen refueling facility and the Odin — a 150-ton ammonia bunker ship that made its way from Bergkamen in North Rhine-Westphalia to Stralsund for the symposium to allow participants to see the safety systems on board. (The extremely exciting voyage of the Odin can be seen on our links page). The symposium kicked off with a highly interesting presentation by Jorgo Chatzimarkakis, CEO Hydrogen Europe, on the European Hydrogen and Ammonia Strategy in the Maritime Sector, which stimulated many discussions afterwards. Other very valuable and exciting inputs were the presentations by Alexander Feindt, MAN Energy Solutions SE on ammonia in shipping including the AmmoniaMOT project and CAMPFIRE partner Malte Zeretzke, Carnival Maritime on new paths in sustainable shipping and challenges ahead for the cruise industry. Also of particular interest and high importance for our future work was the presentation by Conor Fürstenberg Stott from the Ammonia Energy Association (AEA). Conor presented an overview of new international projects in the green ammonia field and the approach to low-carbon and green ammonia certification. Traveling from northern Sweden, Mox Murugan, Invest in Norrbotten, presented a fantastic talk on future Green Ammonia production in Arctic Sweden. We are very much looking forward to working with Mox on a joint project for the handling of green ammonia in the Port of Rostock. The future path and existing challenges in the world scale production of green ammonia were shown by Markus Will, Thyssenkrupp Uhde, in another highly interesting presentation. In this context was. In the southern Baltic Sea region and at the doorstep of the HyStarter region Rügen-Stralsund, the Danish island Bornholm is being developed as a future energy island and supplier of Germany with “green electrons”. These exciting activities were presented to the participants by Michael Antony Brock, Ørstedt. Proton Venture is the European pioneer in Green Ammonia technologies and we were particularly pleased to hear Kevin Rouwenhorst’s presentation on “Ammonia, the ‘Oil of Renewables’ ”. At the end of the event, CAMPFIRE partner Patric Stefaniak, ENERTRAG gave a presentation on Green Ammonia as a seasonal energy storage. We would like to thank again all symposium guests and participants as well as the real-life exhibition partners ZBT and Spetrans Schifffahrts. und Speditions-GmbH for a really successful event.
