The EU project HiPowAR is a joint Euro­pean project of the CAMPFIRE alli­ance and is being carried out by the part­ners Maston AB (Sweden), Ranotor (Sweden), Univer­sity Poli­tec­nico di Milano (Italy), Center for Fuel Cell Tech­no­logy (ZBT, Germany) and Fraun­hofer Insti­tute for Ceramic Tech­no­lo­gies and Systems (IKTS, Germany) under the coor­di­na­tion of the Leibniz Insti­tute for Plasma Science and Tech­no­logy (INP, Germany).

The aim of HiPowAR is to develop a novel membrane-based oxyfuel process for the use of ammonia as a fuel in turbines. The process “Highly Effi­cient Power Produc­tion by Green Ammonia Total Oxida­tion in a Membrane Reactor” repres­ents a leap forward in inno­va­tion and combines know-how from the field of fuel cells and oxygen perme­a­tion with classic combus­tion processes to realize a self-compres­sing combus­tion process. As part of the project, the novel ammonia membrane reactor is being imple­mented as a proof-of-concept at pres­sures above 50 bar in a contai­ne­rized func­tional model. This enables effi­cient conver­sion of the fuel without the addi­tion of supporting fuels.
